Equipped with 1,700 cubic inches of storage space, these Avenir Excursion panniers hold everything from groceries to books to bicycle equipment. The panniers are made of tough 600-denier nylon, with an adjustable nylon strap mounting system that keeps them securely fastened to the rear of your bike. The two main compartments, meanwhile, are large enough for water bottles, clothes, food, and a host of other items. My wife and I have used these for two years, one large set and one medium set. During that time we rode 500 miles across Germany, commuted daily to work, and I just completed a 1,000 mile trip through the mountains and across NC to the sea. Earlier I had a different brand (Trek) which used an elastic cord to fasten to the rack. I found this unsatisfactory, as the cord stretches, allowing a loaded pannier to swing and sway. The Avenir uses a strap that locks tight with a plastic friction piece. It doesn't look especially strong, but has never failed yet. I also appreciate that these panniers are quite lightweight, unlike some other brands that are recommended by full-time bike tourers. These panniers are not waterproof, but they are water resistant. The price is reasonable, they are fairly well-made, and the design is good. If you plan to tour for months at a time through all conditions, you might want something stronger; otherwise, these are a good bet.
NOVEMBER 2008 UPDATE: Based on my recommendation, my son just bought a pair of the large panniers, and reports that the design has changed. Now they incorporate an elastic strap! So my comments above appear obsolete. However, my son seems satisfied with them thus far on his daily commute.

They hook on the Avenir rack I bought perfectly. They will be easy to get off and put back on, something I will do as I commute to work. Adjusting the straps the first time was a chore, but they now hook on the inner side facing the bike to the rack at the bottom, and maybe the inside strap for them should be an inch or two higher. Some outside pockets do not appear to have a way to make sure they stay closed. I might use them for plastic bottles only. Carrying the bags from the bike into the office and back each day leaves me fearful anything in those pockets could easily fall out.
I would need something bigger if I was really touring, but for commuting they are perfect. For people who have trouble mounting them far enough away from the pedals, your rack and bike must be too small. I have a 12 1/2 shoe and put the pannier bags as far back as my Avenir rack allows, on a Schwinn Cruiser and have no problem. In fact, I wish the bags were wider at the bottom.
My plan is to put my work clothes on one side and my daytimer, glasses, and office supplies on the other side. The outer pockets hold my tire pump, tools, and other bike supplies. For each bag there are two support brackets on each side to help carry the weight and one spring clip in the center to keep it on the rack. These three support items are far sturdier than what I have seen on side baskets. This allows me to get them off and on quickly. The two bags are connectable via a velcro handle. I am smart enough to lift by both handles and not trust just the velcro side to support lifting the second bag.
This beats lugging all that stuff in a backpack that had my back wet by the time I got to work!

I purchased the large Avenir Excursion panniers, but had to return them because my heel hit the bag, even with the bags pushed all the way back on my rack (Blackburn MTB rack). I had to purchase the smaller model (1464 cu in) instead and they work great! I really liked these panniers, but would not recommend them for people with larger shoe sizes.
